The problem
Senior citizens are frequently portrayed by traditional media as passive or vulnerable subjects, leaving them excluded from cultural production. Despite more than 80% of over 80s providing active support to their community or family, less than 1.6% of media representations feature them as protagonists. This leads to an Unarchived Memory Gap: the irreversible loss of our cities' oral and local historical heritage.
“Less than 1.6% of traditional media represents adults over 80. While 75% of seniors are active online, they report the lowest levels of digital content creation and collaboration.”

Research & Key Insights
To design a solid solution, our process began with both primary and secondary research focused on ageism, stereotype threat, and digital participation:

- Studies show that a positive perception of aging and goal-oriented intergenerational interaction increase longevity and reduce social isolation.
- Seniors want to share their stories, but lack tailored tools designed for collaborative digital content creation.
- Neighborhood newsstands and historic local structures serve as ideal physical anchor points to build trust and facilitate participation.

The Service Solution
Urban Echoes is structured as a Social Startup operating through a “phygital” ecosystem distributed across three strategically integrated dimensions: Social, Editorial, and Urban.
The 4-Phase Cyclic Process
01. Collect
We gather stories through our Mobile Editorial Unit (Ape Car) engaging seniors in the neighborhood, directly at partner newsstands, or autonomously via QR Codes placed in key locations.
02. Elaborate
The curatorial team edits and cleans the audio tracks, producing short geolocated podcast clips and transcribing texts for print publications.
03. Publish
Every three months, we distribute the Neighborhood Print Fanzine (36 collectible editions per year across the 9 Municipalities). Through the fanzine or the website, users access the Interactive Map (Echo-Map) to listen to the stories directly on site.
04. Echo
We activate the local community with dedicated events near newsstands (talks, listening sessions, special openings) and B2B cultural partnerships.

To ensure project viability, we designed an integrated B2C and B2B offering model:
- B2C (Citizens & Urban Explorers): Sale of print Fanzines (bundled with posters and postcards), use of the geolocated app/map, and participation in neighborhood events.
- B2B (Sponsors, Brands & Institutions): Collaborations with local entities (e.g., Municipality of Milan), social impact/CSR sponsorships (e.g., Fondazione Amplifon), and co-marketing partnerships with media companies and Milanese brands for masterclasses and cultural experiences.

Main Components & Tangible Outputs
The solution takes shape through concrete touchpoints tested for every user group. It combines physical encounters, editorial storytelling, and digital participation into a civic model that strengthens intergenerational exchange, preserves local memory, and creates a scalable framework for neighborhood-based cultural engagement. The result is a system that can be reproduced across different urban contexts while remaining rooted in the identity and history of each community.
